Kathy Sue Smith (Mackie)

Born: 30 March, 1951

Died: 17 June, 2015

Pfafftown:  Kathy Sue Smith Mackie March 30, 1951 - June 17, 2015 Kathy Sue Smith Mackie, 64, born to this earthly body on March 30,1951 in Winston-Salem, NC, went to eternal rest on Wednesday, June 17, 2015. She grew up in Kernersville and graduated from East Forsyth High School in 1969. She attended Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, FL, where she enriched her amazing artistic talent. Working at Piedmont Airlines from 1972-1979, she enjoyed traveling the world with her friends, including childhood friend Beth Fulp-Johnson. She loved the works of Beatrix Potter - Peter Rabbit, the art of Van Gogh, watercolors/pen and ink, the Muppets, watching the birds, and holding her cat. She led an active life until she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis 2 years after the birth of her only child, Anna - who was her everything. In spite of 36 years of multiple surgeries as a "professional patient" and often debilitating pain, she maintained a positive outlook on life. With the loving devotion of her daughter and artwork as therapy, she had courage, a strong will, quick wit, a sense of humor, and impeccable timing to carry her through the tough times. We are grateful for the skill and kindness of her orthopedic surgeon and trusted friend, Dr. Gary Poehling, who said that her spirit is an inspiration to so many. She was "GG" (gorgeous grandmother) to her grandchildren, Alexander Sky Calhoun and Isabella Kathryn Calhoun, who brought her much joy. She is survived by her beloved daughter, Anna Kathryn Calhoun (Brad) and two grandchildren of Pfafftown; her father, Jack C. Smith of Kernersville; two sisters, Diane Smith of Winston-Salem, and Bobbie Roberts (Ronnie) of Kernersville; and two nieces. Close friends and family are invited to a celebration of her life and art on Sunday, June 21, at 2:00pm in their home, 5505 Folkstone Rd., Pfafftown, NC 27040. In lieu of flowers, Kath desired donations to go to her grandchildren's college fund at Raymond James Investments, Attn: Matt Riggs, 301 N. Main St. Suite 2410, Winston-Salem, NC 27101. Reference Kathy Mackie on memo line.

Kathy Sue, Beth Lee and I were extremly close throughout high school. We spent many days skipping school and running the back roads of Kernersville. I will always remember Kathy's gentle spirit and pray that she has found peace in our Saviors loving arms. Her family can find peace in her life well lived.
